World Only in Dreams
From WOiD Wiki
World Only in Dreams (also known as "WOiD," or "WorldOiD") is a free forum-based game located at http://worldoid.com. The game encourages creativity to the point that suggestions made by members (such as races, locations, animals, etc.) are frequently incorporated into the game world. The game is, in fact, based on the idea of a member-built world, in which the game world expands and gains more features as members play out individual character's stories.
History - Creation of World Only in Dreams
In its original incarnation, created in July of 2004, the game was called simply "Only in Dreams" and was only a single thread on a role play forum known as the Embyr Haven. Novalyyn (who went by Dragon Moon at the time), made it with the intention to have it be all-encompassing, a hybrid of fantasy and science fiction. The thread quickly gained popularity, passing many of the forum's other threads in number of posts, and lasted more than a year before finally dying out.
Even before the first thread lost activity though, sequels and spin-offs started going up, threads that were set in the same world or used the same characters and often played off "Dream" part of the title, only one of which was created by the same person as the original. Noting its popularity, Novalyyn posted it on other role play forums, each time starting with the same world, and each time ending up with very different characters featured, who shared in very different stories.
Recalling her first forum role play experience, a cybertown which no longer exists, Novalyyn got an idea for a new incarnation of Only in Dreams. Around mid-2008, she used ProBoards to create a world in a forum, with different boards being different places. Not trusting her own imagination to come up with a decently "complete" world alone, and being that the original nature of the role play was to allow others to get creative, suggestion threads were set up for adding to the world. One major rule change: races, items, etc. from copyrighted materials could no longer be used. Having gone through several tries for a name and finding each taken, she finally was able to settle on "worldoid" - and the original World Only in Dreams was born.
Later that year, Novalyyn's close friend and the creator the Banana-nana-Ninja web cartoon suggested taking it beyond being just a free site. Though uncertain, she agreed, as she was going to be helping to set up his website as well. In April of 2009, WorldOiD.com opened up.
